Made it to the opening reception for 51st Annual Juried Artists' Exhibition, The Summer Show, at the St. Tammany Art Association. It had been awhile since I participated in a juried group show. Great turn out with a lot of quality pieces overall. Check out Covington sometime, it is quite a charming town. I included a couple pics from the opening.
Looking at this blog, it looks like I need to do a little catching up. So about a year ago my wife and I decided to move the family back to Louisiana. The kids and her moved down in August and I moved down this past December. The move continues to affect my studio work in mostly a positive manner. Drawing from a landscape and culture that I longed, for over the past 13 years. My thoughts in the studio hover around a post-Katrina childhood and a palette that draws from the land and environment but also in context in thinking about the area as the northern most point of the Caribbean. Here are some new studio shots from June. Lot's of exhibitions on the horizon.
It funny how playing with new materials or a new approach can spark inspiration. I was ready to take a break from the studio for a little bit, now I just can't wait to get a big bag of plaster. I think I am going to make 20 of these... looking forward to working with the surface, and figuring if color can work in this format. Piece is about 8" x 8", solid plaster with structural support. The perks of hitting the reset button creatively..
A nice opening in a real urban gallery space. It was great to see the work hung so neatly with a lot of breathing room, just the way I like it! A number of good discussions with artists from the Twin Cities and people stopping by the gallery. Looking forward to sharing the work with friends and family who were not able to make the opening last night. The location of the gallery is on 811 LaSalle Ave, which is on the backside of Nicollet Ave, where there is a plenty of things to do in either direction. I am always impressed with Minneapolis's thriving downtown. The exhibit will be up through the month of October, and part of November. Hope you get the chance take it in...
Gallery 13 811 LaSalle Ave. Minneapolis, MN 5502 651-592-5503 - info@gallery13.com - www.gallery13.com The best feeling as a painter for me is resolving work. There is a point in my creative process where I feel I have exhausted an idea or painting, and just want to be done. Today I finished 8 new paintings for an October 3 - November 1, 2014 exhibit at Gallery 13 in Minneapolis, MN. The canvases have been kicking around my small studio for the last 3 months. 4 - 30" x 40", 4 - 24" x 24". It is such a releif to finally get them out of the studio and into the world. These eight new works will be combined with older works made last winter. I am very excited to see all the work exhibited together. Each painting is also framed in maple floater frames.
I also enjoy hitting the reset button in the studio, and relish the opportunity to clean and reorganize things, along with thinking about new work I would like to make in the future Oh well hope to see people this coming Friday night in Minneapolis.
